What Happens If Your Fit Changes Before the Wedding

An honest look at what to do if your body changes between your last fitting and the wedding.

Weddings ask a lot of a body — new workout routines, travel, stress, celebrations with a lot of toasting involved. It’s common, and completely normal, for a bride’s fit to shift somewhat in the weeks before the wedding. What matters is how it’s handled, not whether it happens at all.

Say something as soon as you notice. The earlier a stylist or seamstress knows about a change, the more options exist to address it. A shift caught two weeks out is a simple adjustment; the same shift caught two days out is a much tighter problem to solve.

Small changes are usually a small fix. Most gowns are built with some room in the seams specifically for this reason — a few inches, taken in or let out, is often all it takes to bring the fit back to where it should be.

A last-minute fitting is normal, not a failure. Many brides schedule a quick touch-up appointment in the final week regardless of whether anything has changed, simply because bodies do shift under the particular stress of wedding-week logistics — travel, sleep, nerves, and all of it.

Avoid drastic last-minute changes to diet or exercise. The urge to make a quick adjustment before the big day is understandable, but sudden shifts in the final week can actually work against a fit that was otherwise on track.

Trust your stylist’s read on timing. If a change happens close enough to the wedding that alterations aren’t advisable, there are still ways to adjust comfort and fit on the day itself — from foundations to styling choices — so don’t hesitate to have that conversation.

A dress is meant to fit the person wearing it, not the other way around. A body that changes doesn’t undo any of the work that came before it — it’s just one more thing a good alterations team knows how to handle.
